ALTERNATIVE PAINT TECHNIQUES

Paint doesn’t need to be a solid color.

There are other creative solutions for changing the look of a room.

WHITE-WASHING: The look of natural wood is beautiful, but can be dark, especially on a ceiling. Whitewashing allows you to retain the feel and look of wood, while lightening the whole room. It gives a soft and bright feeling that’s fresh and clean, but still more natural than a solid paint color.

This home had yellow and bright red brick from the 1970’s. By selectively patching, adding additional grout, and restaining the mantel, I created a soft and bright feel.

What looks like stained wood below is not what it appears. I have used quality acrylic paints to create this woodgrain effect. There are a few benefits of paint instead of stained wood. One benefit is that this is a tremendously less expensive option than replacing your existing garage door, balcony, or trim. You can make any material look, such as a metal garage door, look like high quality lumber. Another benefit is that a painted surface has greater longevity than natural stained wood. Stained wood needs to be maintained every year or so with a new coat of sealer. It can’t be caulked and sealed as easily and touch-ups are much more difficult. Most people will not be able to tell the difference between my paint and stained wood, and you will appreciate it’s cost-effective, long lasting beauty for many years.
